Autism Awareness Isn’t Enough- We Need Better Answers

Autism Awareness Day has become widely recognized, and for many of us, autism is no longer an abstract concept. It’s personal.

When my son was diagnosed in 2001, autism affected approximately 1 in 250 children. Today, that number has risen astronomically to 1 in 31 children and 1 in 20 boys.

While increased recognition and broader diagnostic criteria likely play a role, the reality is that many children and families are facing significant challenges- ranging from communication and behavioral difficulties to complex medical concerns.

Every child with autism is unique, and that individuality should always be respected and supported. At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge that many are struggling and in need of more comprehensive care.

As a physician, I believe we need to expand how we approach autism:

- Looking beyond symptoms alone

- Considering underlying medical and environmental contributors

- Supporting both neurological and overall health

This doesn’t mean abandoning current approaches- it means building on them with a more integrative and individualized mindset.

Families deserve answers, support, and options.

At Hearthstone Family Care, that’s the goal.
